Research Commons
Welcome to the Rhodes University Library Services Research Commons web site. The Research Commons (RC) is one of six new library facilities recently opened by the institutions UCT, Wits, UKZN, Universities of Pretoria and Stellenbosch and Rhodes, all of whom are participating in a joint project supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The Carnegie project aims to develop specialized facilities, shared technologies, and highly-trained professional librarians to increase library support for researchers at each institution.
More about the Carnegie Project
The Research Commons has been designed as a scholarly common room for senior postgraduate students and academics. It is located on level 2 of the Rhodes University Library, beyond the Science and Pharmacy Faculty hub, and is open, via access control, to academic and research staff, postdocs and postgraduate students at masters and doctoral level. Experienced library staff members are on hand to assist with users’ information needs and to arrange consultations with subject specialists as needed. The facility will be overseen by post-graduate student assistants after office hours.
Facilities include high-end PCs with DVD writers, laptops for loan-use in the Research Commons, uninterrupted power supply, high-speed internet access, printer-copiers, and a scanner, as well as a consultation room/office and a seminar room.
