Victoria Mxenge

Victoria Mxenge Banner
Victoria Mxenge House is part of Lillian Ngoyi Hall. It is a fairly new residence occupied for the first time in 2002, with spacious rooms and a beautiful view.
There are 62 rooms in the residence and the girls are under the care of the warden and two subwardens.
As a relatively new residence we have few traditions, but have already an entrenched culture in our house of "Respect" - respect for self (giving yourself the opportunity to discover who you are and who you want to be), respect for each other and respect for property. We believe that we are a family at the Vic and, sibling rivalry and squabbles notwithstanding, as a family we care about each girl. At Victoria Mxenge House you are encouraged to work hard and stretch yourself in all spheres while providing a safe and comforting home to return to and grow from.
In Victoria Mxenge we value excellence in all spheres of life, particularly in the academic arena and on the sporting field and extra-mural field (such as in societies). Academic goals are strongly encouraged in Victoria Mxenge House and we aim to be in the top 10% both in the hall and in the university.
Academic recognition is given both in the hall and in the house. The girls in Victoria Mxenge House have excelled in the sporting field, with some of the members of the house, representing Rhodes University in basketball, canoeing, golf, rowing and athletics, among other sports. Social sporting is also highly values in the house, and participation in the inter-res sporting events is strongly encouraged. The ladies in the the house have also undertaken several leadership positions in several societies, including in Golden Key, SASCO, Xhosa Society and debating among many others.
The residence is friendly and fun and is an open arena allowing people of different nationalities and different cultures to explore and understand their similarities and differences which is an integral part of the Rhodes experience. This is important in ensuring well rounded, open minded top class international citizens.
