FRF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION CHAIR
Prof Marc Schäfer - BSc, HDipEd (WITS), BEd, MEd (Rhodes), PhD (Curtin)
Professor Schäfer is responsible for Mathematics Education in the Department. He is a recipient of the First Rand Foundation Chair in Mathematics Education.
Marc is passionate about the soul and philosophy of Mathematics and is currently compiling a comprehensive directory of all published research documents (theses, journal articles, conference articles and reports) in Mathematics Education by South African authors from the period 1930 - 2009. His other research interest in the field of Mathematics education is directed towards geometric and spatial conceptualisation, mathematical cognition, teaching and teacher education.
He coordinates the MEd and PhD programme in Mathematics Education. He is the current president of the Southern African Association in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (SAARMSTE).
He was Head of the Education Department from 2005 – 2009.
