Introduction

The mayflies of South Africa are currently classified into ten families, but several other families occur elsewhere. The higher classification followed here follows McCafferty (1991, 1997).

The following catalogue will change as new taxa are discovered and described, and as increasing understanding of phylogenies give a clearer indication of relationships. The catalogue includes all of the synonyms for each species and the name of the author responsible for its current placing, with the date of publication.
