Guest edited by RU lecturer in jazz Dr Nishlyn Ramanna, this collection also features contributions from RU associate professor in music theory Dr Jeffrey Brukman, whose article considers the music of Paul Hanmer, a prolific South African jazz pianist and composer, and recent MMUS graduate of the RU music department.

Other featured contributions include an article by Dr Lindelwa Dalamba, a graduate of the RU music department and St John’s College, Cambridge, and presently a lecturer in jazz studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, and by Professor Brett Pyper, a past lecturer of the RU music department and presently Head of the School of Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand. Other contributors include Professor Salim Washington of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Gwen Ansell (author of Soweto Blues: Jazz, Politics and Popular Music in South Africa), and Professor Christopher Merz of the University of Northern Iowa.
