PERSONALISING YOUR ROOM:
-
Furniture can be moved around to create a space comfortable to live in.
-
Many students like to bring their own duvet cover and pillow cases.
-
As no prestik may be affixed to the walls pictures may be put up on the notice board and cupboard doors, but not to the
walls. -
Continental pillows, small throw-rugs and bean bags also add a touch of individuality.
-
All Rhodes residences are wired for internet usage so a computer is an asset. At a cost of approximately R1200 per year you can access the internet, check your email etc. from your own room 24/7.
-
An extension cord is an asset as it allows you to move your room around without being limited by plug points.
-
A small portable sound system (or speakers for your PC/laptop) is also a good idea, but bear in mind that there are silence hours so you won’t be allowed to blast music at all hours.
OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION:
-
Feb/March are the hottest months of the year in Grahamstown with temperatures often reaching 35+ degrees so sun block, flip-flops or sandals and a hat or cap are essentials.
-
A raincoat or all-weather jacket is a must as we are famous for having four seasons in a day and our winters can be very wet indeed.
-
A swimming costume comes in very handy on hot days and the Rhodes pool is available to all students during the day.
-
All Rhodes Residences are non-smoking, so try to kick the habit or get used to smoking in the rain!
RESIDENCE FACILITIES:

Bathrooms
Generally, each corridor has its own bathroom with basins, showers and toilets. Some of the older residences also have baths.
Kitchenettes
All residences have kitchenettes, equipped with a fridge for saving perishable goods, a microwave for reheating mid-night snacks and a kettle, as well as sink for washing-up.
Common Rooms
All residences have at least one common room (lounge areas), equipped with TVs, lounge chairs and a couple of coffee tables. Some also have pool tables, table-tennis tables etc.
Laundry Rooms
All residences have at least one laundry room, equipped with washing machines and tumble dryers. Unlike other universities in SA, Rhodes doesn't charge for the use of these machines, so you won't have to schlep down-town to the laundromat. If you've never done your own laundry, don't panic! Get your mom (or dad) to show you the basics (seperate colours etc.) and our house comm members will be sure to fill you in on the specifics of laundry use for your res.
