National Research Foundation Fellowships:
South African Biosysystematics Initiative (SABI):
The National Research Foundation (NRF) on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) is offering SABI (South African Biosystematics Initiative) Postdoctoral Fellowships SABI was developed to significantly enhance South Africa’s capacity to undertake research in biosystematics, thereby establishing a skills base and information platform at the foundation of all scientific endeavour in the life sciences, such that the full potential of South Africa’s unique biological resources can be realised and safeguarded for the future benefit of all. SABI is funded by DST and managed by the NRF. See the link for more information.
Free Standing NRF Fellowship:
The National Research Foundation Freestanding fellowships were introduced as a means of contributing towards human resource development by providing postdoctoral research fellowships, based on merit and potential. The fellowships are intended to support candidates who would like to pursue postdoctoral research training in all areas of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) and in Social Sciences and Humanities, in South Africa and abroad. DST Innovation Fellowship (SA Citizens & Permament Residents Only):
The objectives of the Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme are to enable young scientists and professionals to access world class strategic and applied research opportunities in an academic environment and thereby strengthen their curriculum vitae and consequently improve their career progression prospects in the national system of innovation. To attract young scientists and professionals of the highest calibre in order to complement senior researchers influence on innovation through research and to support young scientists and professionals in strategic, basic and applied research with the intention of promoting of innovation. Rhodes Postdoctoral Fellowships:
The Fellowships are intended to foster existing academic research and scholarly or creative activities within Rhodes University departments and institutes. Ideally a Fellow's proposed work will closely complement existing programmes in the host department. See the link above for more information.

Claud Leon Fellowships:
The Claude Leon Foundation is a South African charitable trust, resulting from a bequest by Claude Leon (1884 – 1972). The Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme in the Sciences is one of the principal programmes of the Claude Leon Foundation. The Trustees of the Foundation seek to upgrade research at South African universities in the faculties of Science, Engineering and Medical Sciences by making awards to both South African and foreign postdoctoral scientists, who should increase the volume and quality of research output, transfer technical skills, and generally enhance the research culture. Applications must be pre-approved by Rhodes University and then forwarded to the Foundation - take this into account when considering deadlines. See the link above for more information.

Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships:
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has established two Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Rhodes University. These Fellowships are for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a further year. The Fellowships are intended to foster existing academic research and scholarly or creative activities within Departments and Institutes at Rhodes University. The Fellow’s proposed work should complement existing programmes within the host department. See the link for more information.
