How It'll Affect You — PBX Replacement
The renewal will involve the installation of two complete new PBX systems, one in each of the Struben building and the Africa Media Matrix. This will be one of the first steps that occurs, and will probably be one of the most disruptive.
In order to facilitate the installation of these new PBX systems there are likely to be a number of campus-wide telephony outages. This probably means that for a short period of time none of the telephones on campus will work, and the University will be unable to receive incoming calls or make outgoing calls.
In the same way, when we finally decommission the old system towards the end of the project, there may be further campus-wide disruptions as we disconnect it from the telephone network.
It isn't yet known exactly how many of these outages there will be, how long they'll last, or when they'll happen. We will, however, make every effort to schedule them in such a way that we minimise the inconvenience to people. We'll also publish full details of the outages well in advance, both on this web page and in other places such as noticeboard.ru.ac.za.
