Georgina Barrett
MA(Edinburgh), MA(Kings College, University of London) Georgina's main research interests include critical security studies and international political sociology although she currently teaches on International Relations and also the United Nations system. Georgina is a lecturer and PhD student in the Department. Contact: G.Barrett@ru.ac.za Current Research: Georgina is originally from the UK and joined the department in 2008 as a PhD candidate. Her research draws on her interest in critical security studies and international political sociology to explore the relationship between sovereignty and security in Southern Africa, particularly around the phenomenon of Peace Parks. Georgina is also interested in democracy building in the Horn of Africa, specifically Somaliland, following her visit to the region as an election observer in 2005. On her return, she was one of several observers who, along with members of the Somaliland Diaspora, co-founded Somaliland Focus (UK) to increase awareness about developments in the country. Georgina was a contributing author to the Progressio Report on the election entitled, Further Steps to Democracy: The Somaliland Parliamentary Elections September 2005. More recently, she has co-authored an article with Prof. Peter Vale on the career of Thabo Mbeki, entitled 'The curious career of an African modernizer: South Africa's Thabo Mbeki' and published in the Journal of Contemporary Politics. Georgina is teaching Politics 1 International Relations in the fourth term and a Diploma course on "International Peace and Security- Challenging the Role of the United Nations" in the second semester.
