Dominant language practices in an environment almost certainly contribute to the dominance of certain ways of being over others and the degrees of comfort/discomfort that people in an institution experience in different facets of institutional life. Many institutions do have language policies in place which reference the promotion of multilingualism as an important value. However the translation of policy into concrete practice is often found wanting. An important part of understanding dominant and subordinated features of institutional cultures will be to understand the experiences of our staff and students in relation to language in the institutional environment.
