Dr Isaias Chachine
Senior Programme Officer (Mozambique)
Isaias was born in Magula-Gaza, outside Xai-xai, in Southern Mozambique. After completing his matric, he enrolled at Instituto Superior Pedagogico for studies in pedagogy and theories of Education. Isaias holds a Bachelor of Theology Honours from the University of KwaZulu Natal, and is an ordained priest in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, Diocese of Lebombo, in Mozambique. As a priest, Isaias was involved with various organizations of welfare in Maputo, aimed at alleviating the plight of the poor, coordinating the Anglican Church Street Children Rehabilitation Centre in Maputo.
In 2008, Isaias obtained his PhD in Ethics from Uppsala University, Sweden. Between 2001 and 2013, Isaias joined the College of the Transfiguration in Grahamstown, as part of the academic staff lecturing in ethics. From 2010 to 2013 Isaias was a visiting scholar in the Department of Politics and International Studies at Rhodes University. Before joining the PSAM, Isaias was a rector of St John-the-Divine Anglican Church, Durban.
Isaias’ research interests include the interplay of human rights, community, justice, and freedom on social accountability and poverty alleviation in Africa; with specific emphasis on Liberalism, Communitarianism, and African contributions to the ethics of social accountability.
