South Africa's proposed carbon tax has the potential to revolutionise the South African economy towards a more labour intensive ecologically sound paradigm or, on the other hand, to act as a substantial tax on South Africans whilst allowing South Africa to continue on its resource and capital intensive paradigm and inadequately addressing issues of climate change and inequality. South Africa's current unequal and unjust economic system is a heavily incumbent energy system with a degree of political, economic and social embeddedness that makes it difficult to dislodge. The carbon tax, if implemented correctly, can help dislodge that system towards a more just and equitable system for both current and future generations.
SEACC SF has delivered hundreds of signatures to parliament to push for a carbon tax which will dislodge that system towards a more just and equitable future. However, the tax is now stuck in political limbo as government decides what to do with it, but SEACC SF has its ears to the ground, and when the time comes we will be sure to continue to push for a tax which creates a better and just future for all.
