Greening Initiatives
Both on campus and beyond RU GREEN is working on implementing projects to help make our communities more environmentally-friendly (or greener), while also hopefully creating jobs, providing educational experience, and uplifting communities. Below are just some of the ways we are doing so:
Working with various student organisations, like Galela Amanzi, as well as with Rhodes University to raise awareness and deal with water issues through the For Love of Water @ Rhodes (FLOW@R) Initiative.
RU Green goes on regular outings to remove alien trees, which drain water supplies and oust indigenous species. We also go on river-clean ups to remove the waste that ends up in our rivers.
We also work with Rhodes University Environmental Representatives within the residence system to help implement and introduce environmental initiatives to Rhodes University residences.
Working with Rhodes University to help promote and standardise double-sided printing. We have put up posters promoting double-sided printing at all the printers on campus.
Promoting alternative more sustainable forms of transport through Walk-To-Work Weeks, the construction, promotion and demonstration of electric bicycles and more. RU Green built an electric bicycle last year, which is now housed at the Environmental Learning and Research Center and is available for those who would like to try it out.
