Geyser Blankets
RU Green is working to install geyser blankets in the broader Grahamstown community. A geyser blanket is a layer of insulation that is wrapped around a geyser as depicted in the picture below. The purpose of doing so is to insulate the heat produced by the geyser thus saving electricity required to replace the heat that is lost to the surrounding air. In doing so the geyser blanket not only reduces the amount of your electricity each household uses, and saves money, but furthermore this helps to reduce the concomitant emissions associated with the production of energy in South Africa's fossil fuel intensive energy economy. Because hot water electricity use comprises around 40% of a typical households consumption, it is important to reduce heat losses in this area. Often geyser water temperature will drop by 1 degree C per hour, so constant energy is needed to maintain the temperature. This blanket can cut this energy use by half. It is not fiberglass, so is easily installed without mess. Thus the geyser blanket ensures a substantial saving both financially and environmentally for each household.
