Working together with the Masihlule Project, RU Green aims to promote recycling in Grahamstown (iRhini). The Masihlule Project is a local initiative which employs 31 people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to recycle the waste that is sent up to the Grahamstown dump. This initiative is important for a number of reasons: firstly, it creates jobs; secondly, it reduces Grahamstown's environmental footprint; thirDly, according to South African legislation no new land fill sites will be opened, and so we as a nation need to come up with ways to reduce our waste stream.
The Masihlule Project operates according to a two bag-system, whereby members of the Grahamstown community who would like to recycle place all recyclable items into clear or orange bags. The rest of the non-recyclable waste is then put in a black bag. Both are sent up to the Grahamstown dump via the usual waste strem and at the dump the Masihlule Project sorts the recyclable waste. On site they convert all plastic waste into recycled plastic logs, which is then sold to http://www.envirofurn.co.za/ who make furniture out of it. The other recyclable items are sold to other organisations who recycle them.
The Masihlule Project also does separate collections on Mondays and Thursdays for Grahamstown West, and on Tuesdays for Rhodes University. The Masihlule Project is able and willing to make arrangements with individual organisations and schools should they want to partake in recycling. For more information call Noshipho on: 0733876496
