Greening Initiatives
Both on campus and beyond RU GREEN is working on implementing projects to help make our communities more environmentally-friendly (or greener), while also hopefully creating jobs, providing educational experience, and uplifting communities. Below are just some of the ways we are doing so:
Working with the Masihlule Project to help promote and develop job-creating recycling initiatives in Grahamstown: http://thepeoplesrecycling.org/
Working with Rhodes University to help promote and standardise double-sided printing.
Working with various student organisations, like Galela Amanzi, as well as with Rhodes University to raise awareness and deal with water issues through the For Love of Water @ Rhodes (FLOW@R) Initiative.
Contributing and supporting the Rhodes Green Fund, which aims to green the University. In 2011 we raised thousands of rands for the Green Fund.
Promoting alternative more sustainable forms of transport through Walk-To-Work Weeks, the construction, promotion and demonstration of electric bicycles and more.
Making information from research on the environmental impacts of food available so that community members can make more responsible choices about the food that they eat.
We also work with Rhodes University Environmental Representatives within the residence systemto help implement and introduce environmental initiatives to Rhodes University residences.
