___________________Vermiculture_____________________
Vermiculture is the process of breaking down biodegradable waste into an organic compost and fertiliser through the use of worms known as red wigglers and other biotic organisms. The Rhodes Worm Farm project was started in the beginning of 2011 with the first installation of a worm farm bin, since then the project has grown considerably and there are a number of bins installed across Rhodes University, including two bins open for viewing at the Environmental Learning and Research Centre.
The aim of the project is to provide a succesful environmental alternative method of dealing with biodegradable waste, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and produces valuable outputs in the form of fertiliser rather than waste.
The eventual aim of the project is to:
a) Become financially independent through the sale of vermitea an organic fertiliser produced through vermiculture;
b) Develop worm farm projects in broader Grahamstown;
c) Use knowledge gained to educate community about environmentally friendly alternatives such as vermiculture.
