Videos DVDs

Various health and safety videos and DVDs are available to Rhodes University staff for viewing. Numerous online educational videos are also readily accessible.

  • Emergency evacuation - getting out alive: (approx 16 minutes) Learning Resource produced by Coastal Training Technologies Corp, covers How to respond; Specific emergency situations (Earthquakes; Hazardous materials; Explosions).

  • Fire Safety & Security Talk: (approx 22 minutes) DVD recording of a talk given by Mr Dave Charteris of RU Campus Protection Unit. Part I deals with security in residences and other university buildings, and Part II deals with basic fire safety.

  • Fire Safety - there's no second chance: (approx 21 minutes) Learning Resource produced by Coastal Training Technologies Corp, covers Elements of fire; Chemical chain reaction; Classes of fire; Fire prevention; Fire extinguishers; Emergency Action Plan.

  • First Aid - Initial Response: (approx 26 minutes) Learning Resource produced by Coastal Video Communications Corp in 1993. It covers The need to know first aid; Emergency action principles (Scene survey; Send for help; Remain calm & reassuring; Primary survey);  Bleeding; Shock; Leg injuries; Bone injuries; Spinal injuries; Electrical shock and Chemical burn injuries; as well as First aid tips in each situation.

  • Safe Build - Occupational Health & Safety Video Series: produced by Master Builders Association. While this has been developed for the construction industry, the principles apply equally in all other workplaces, and many of the chapters (listed below) are relevant to areas on campus:

    1. Disk 1: (total 1 hour 11 minutes) begins with a brief introduction to the series (8 min) followed by 1. Health & safety administration (13 min); 2. Education, training and promotion (5 min); 3. Public safety, security & emergency preparedness (5 min); 4. PPE (7 min); 5. Housekeeping (4 min); 6A. Scaffolding (16 min); 6B. Formwork & support-work (8 min); 7. Ladders (5 min).
    2. Disk 2: (total 50 minutes) deals with 8. Fall protection (8 min); 9. Electrical safe guarding (6 min); 10. Fire prevention & precautions (5 min); 11. Demolition work (5 min); 12. Excavations (5 min); 13. Tools (5 min); 14. Lifting machinery & lifting tackle (15 min).
    3. Disk 3: (total 47 minutes) deals with 15. Hoists (5 min); 16. Conveyors (3 min); 17. Site plant & machinery (14 min); 18. Plant & storage yards (15 min); 19. Work place, environment, health & hygiene (10 min).

  • Housekeeping - working smart: Part I (approx 12 minutes) deals with safety in the factory. Part II (approx 12 minutes) deals with safety in the office. Both promote the value of working in a neat and tidy manner, with a place for everything and everything in its place - applicable to all workplaces.

  • It won't happen to me: (approx 15 minutes) deals with the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE), with testimonies from injured people, with pictures. While the old regulations are mentioned, this is still covered by the new laws.

  • Safety is your responsibility: (approx 15 minutes) Part I: Employees need to know their responsibilities, the scope of work they are employed to do, and should have the ability, or be instructed in, how to carry out the tasks expected of them.Part II: Supervising for safety. This deals with having the right person in a position as regards capability and attitude. It is suitable viewing for supervisory staff. While the old regulations are mentioned, the content is still valid for today.
