What is a Numeracy Buzz?
While the main focus of our Chair activity is on our participating schools we feel that the sustainability of our work beyond the five year period will depend on strengthening ongoing opportunities for numeracy education in the wider Grahamstown community.
We initiate numeracy learner activities across Grahamstown schools with a range of partners including the Albany Museum, RUMEP, Sci-Fest and the Grahamstown district DoE.
These are just some of the activities we have undertaken in the last 2 years:
- Grade 2, 3 and 4 online numeracy games workshops: Partner: Sci Fest - March 2011 and June 2012
- Grade 2, 3 and 4 maths problem solving relay competitions: Partner: AMESA- Aug 2011
- Grade 4-6 mathematics challenge: Partner: AMESA, RUMEP - Aug 2011 and Aug 2012
- Mathemagic assembly shows: Partner: Steve Sherman, Living Maths – March 2012
- Family Maths Evening: Partner: Steve Sherman, Living Maths – October 2012
- Fieldtrips to Sci Fest for clubs and classes – March 2012
- Numeracy Maths movies: “Donald Duck in Mathemagicland” – June 2012
Grocotts 'Ukufunda' supplement
In 2012 we introduced a weekly numeracy ‘Fun with Maths’ page onto the existing ‘Ukufunda’ supplement in a local Grahamstown newspaper (Grocotts). The aim of this page is to get learners, parents and teachers to engage learners with various numeracy concepts in a fun way that differs from traditional teaching approaches.
Click here to access the supplements for use at home or in the classroom.
