A number of Grahamstown locals are among close to 18 000 athletes taking part in the Comrades Marathon on Sunday 2 June.
This year’s Comrades is an ‘Up’ run, starting in Durban. The total distance is 86.96km, ending in Pietermaritzburg.
Tomorrow is the 88th Comrades Marathon.
Sisa Camagu, running in the colours of Run/Walk For Life Athletics Club – Eastern Province, is expected to be the first local runner home.
Sisa’s qualifying time of 2:47:20 sees him start in the A seeding group.
All athletes are grouped according to their qualifying times. Sisa qualified at the Heroes Marathon in Mthatha in December 2012.
This is Sisa’s second Comrades, after finishing last year’s ‘Down’ run. He clocked 7:49:20 for last year’s event.
“I’m good, and I’m aiming for a silver medal," Speaking to Grocott’s Mail from Durban on Saturday 1 June, Sisa said.
To qualify for a silver athletes need to run the Comrades in under 7 hours 30 minutes.
The race starts at 5.30am and the cut-off time is 12 hours (5.30pm).
