The intervarsity hockey games kicked off on a high note on 17 August. Rhodes men’s fourth team beat University of Fort Hare’s first team 3-1. This came as quite a shock to the visitors and set a precedent for unpredictable results.
The next game saw teams which, at least on paper, were more evenly matched. The men's third teams from Rhodes and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) played out to a frustrating 1-1 draw, which was followed by the women’s third teams from the same two universities. This time Rhodes emerged victorious, winning 3-1.
Unfortunately Rhodes’ unbeaten streak came to an end when the men’s second team was beaten 3-1 by NMMU. Then, just as the Rhodes women’s second team looked set to win their game 1-0, the power went out and play was called off with only a few minutes left.
The power failure meant that supporters began to leave the field, but luckily the lights were restored in time for the showpiece event. While the Rhodes men’s first team drew 0-0 with NMMU, they didn’t fail to entertain the many fans who had stayed behind, as the game was played with great energy and skill.
