Saturday’s final Inter-Varsity rugby game between Walter Sisulu University (WSU) and Rhodes got off to a slow start, as previous soccer matches that had run overtime. Kick-off was delayed by more than an hour. However, this didn’t dampen the supporters’ spirits as the stands and surrounding lawns remained tightly packed throughout the wait.
The first half belonged to Rhodes. They scored a try after just five minutes, as Kaiser Tabane dotted down in the corner. It was unconverted, though, and by half-time WSU had put their name on the board thanks to a penalty kick.
After half time, WSU really brought their A-game, and punished Rhodes for some lax defending. Not everything went their way, however: left wing Wayne Leander was stretched off the field with a broken shin.
WSU’s Daniel Benjamin was the man of the match as he scored two tries to give his team a sizable lead. Rhodes put up a fight and scored again late in the second half, but WSU’s Sibongiseni Matshikiza scored again. This means that the Rhodes first team lost the final 28-15 for the fourth consecutive year, after losing to NMMU for the past three years.
