The Rhodes canoeing team finished fourth among competing universities at the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon, which ended on Saturday 6 October.
The team finished behind winners University of Stellenbosch, second placed University of KwaZulu Natal, with the University of Cape Town placing third.
The annual canoeing showcase, held along the Great Fish River which flows through the Eastern Cape, attracted thousands of enthusiasts including throngs of Rhodes students.
“We had 21 paddlers and more than half of them were new club members,” said George Purbrick, transport co-ordinator for the Rhodes Canoe Club.
“It takes a lot to get someone to Fish, so we’re building a good base for next year,” added Purbrick.
Only four of the paddlers were K1 (singles), with the remaining representatives taking part in K2.
