Mandla Gagayi, Head of Sports at Rhodes University, has been appointed the Deputy Chef de Mission of the University Sports South Africa (USSA) delegation to the World Student Games to be held in Kazan, Russia this July.
The World Student Games (also known as Universiade) is an international sporting event held by the International University Sports Federation for university athletes. The event is held every second year, and will be taking place from 5-19 July 2013.
Gagayi attended a previous World Student Games with the USSA delegation to Bangkok, Thailand in the position of Logistics Manager. To be chosen for the position from amongst the Heads of Sports of the 23 South African universities is testimony to Rhodes University’s reputation for good governance. Gagayi said, “My appointment shows the calibre of leadership at our university.”
The USSA 2013 team consists of 175 members from many different sporting disciplines. In his position as Deputy Chef de Mission Gagayi will be overseeing the coaches of the various teams, ensuring that the USSA team is represented at all fixtures and will act as the media contact during the games, with the aid of a media attaché for translation purposes.
4th year Rhodes University Journalism student Fabio De Dominicis will also be attending. De Dominicis was chosen as one of two South African sports journalism students to attend the Young Sports Journalists’ Seminar in Kazan, Russia during the Games.
