The Rhodes men’s 8 ball pool team proved why they are the best, when they won their eighth consecutive intervarsity pool tournament on Friday (17 August).
Rhodes started well, beating Walter Sisulu University (WSU) 14-1. WSU tried to redeem themselves towards the end of the game, but it was too late, as Rhodes won by a comfortable margin.
Rhodes went on to beat Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) 13-2 and ultimately won the final against University of Fort Hare.
The Rhodes ladies’ team lost in their final against WSU. These were the only two teams in the tournament, and as a result each player had to play more games than the men’ team. WSU started their game strongly, but a late resurgence from Rhodes meant that it was incredibly close. The final score was 37-35 to the visitors.
Shaun Gordon, captain and coach of the Rhodes 8 ball pool men’s team, said that this year’s team is the strongest that Rhodes has ever had. “We have two very good players on the bench who could have slotted easily in the squad and produced the goods.” He went on to say that winning by such large margins was somewhat unprecedented, but it bodes well for Rhodes sport.
