With the Mutual and Federal Universities Boatrace fast approaching – the Kowie River has been a hive of activity. Rhodes crews have been busy perfecting their rowing skills, putting more emphasis on speed, endurance and corners. On the sidelines they are motivated by Rhodes staff rowing crew of Sue Smailes, Rod Walker, Sanel Sobahle, Catherine Deiner, Mandla Gagayi; Rose Thornycroft, Mike Bailey, and Jack Bacela – also preparing for a long standing race against the staff of University of Johannesburg.

The Boatrace will start with crew registration on 04 September, followed by heads races, B finals and Staff Race on 05 – 06 September with finals scheduled for Saturday 07 September 2013.

In 2012 Rhodes men’s B Crew won their finals, women’s A Crew won the most improved; but the men’s A and women’s B crews did not have great races. So 2013 is definitely a year to take Rhodes rowing a step up, and if the 2013 regattas are anything to go by then Rhodes crews will definitely come out of boatrace with something better than last year.
