Chess
At the Rhodes Chess Club, both social and competitive chess are played.
Players of all levels are welcome. Some of our players are learning the rules of chess, some are social players, and others regularly compete in top-level tournaments.
We attend several tournaments throughout the year, including open tournaments in Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, and East London. We take part in the Inter-Varsity and USSA chess events, as well as hosting our own tournaments (notably the annual Rhodes Open and Rhodes Closed), and we also host some smaller events (blitz tournaments, etc). Practices are on Monday and Wednesday evenings (19h00–21h00), at the Chess Club House, which is a blockhouse situated next to the Nelson Mandela Dining Hall, overlooking Kings soccer field, by Alec Mulins Sports Hall.
Our practices are friendly and casual. Coaching is provided by our coach, Andrew Martin and stronger club players are always willing to help weaker ones to learn. The Chess Club is a great place to take some time out while improving your mental and logical skills. Come join us!
