Karate (Shotokan)
The Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Club has had a turbulent and great success in the last few years with regards to the growth of club membership and the variety of events that have taken place. Sensei Gary (5th dan) says that “karate training provides one of the smartest ways in which to exercise the mind and body” as well as developing the ability to be able to defend oneself. The Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Club has certainly been exercising this notion as well as a fantastic team spirit which evolves from training and competing. The most recent achievement was the South African Nationals that were held in Uitenhage (2011); the Rhodes team was one of the smallest and yet brought back home a total of 15 medals, while only sending 7 karatekas. “JOIN US IF YOU CAN’T BEAT US AND GIVE YOURSELF A FIGHTING CHANCE”.
