The Rhodes University Rifle Club offers opportunities to all, whether you are an accomplished shot or have never touched a rifle. Something that distinguishes the RURC from most other rifle clubs is the fact that our members have access to a selection of air and .22 rifles, so you do not have to own a firearm in order to be a member of the RURC. All new members will start off with instruction on basic firearm and range safety.
Our range can accommodate a variety of events, with the most popular being 50m prone. The range is also large enough to accommodate a variety of members and thus we cater for Social, Standard and Competitive members.
Social members will receive instruction in basic firearm and range safety and will have access to the air rifles in the club. Should they so desire (and show the necessary competence) they can upgrade to standard membership later.
Standard members will receive instruction in basic firearm and range safety and will have access to the air rifles in the club. Once they have shown the necessary competence, they will also have access to .22 rifles. Standard members are encouraged to participate in our local league shoots, but will not be SATRA affiliated so will not automatically qualify for provincial and national events.
Competitive members will automatically be SATRA affiliated, and apart from the local league shoots, will also have the opportunity to compete in provincial and national events.
Apart from training and competitive shoots, the range also hosts FUN shoots. Here the emphasis is on having as much fun as one can without compromising on safety. Events includes shooting at moving targets and the ever popular duelling pillars, where two shots go head to head to see who can knock over the other ones targets first, and a whole host of others.
