Siyaphambili
The ABET Literacy Programme - Siyaphambili - offers staff the opportunity to improve their educational qualifications up to grade 9 (std 7) and can assist staff with no formal educational qualification as well as those wanting to study at any one of the 4 ABET levels (similar to the various grades at school). Staff who wish to join this programme are required to undergo a formal assessment to determine on which ABET level they should be placed.
This programme focuses on numeracy/Maths and English literacy. In addition, the programme also teaches valuable life skills such as how to construct a business letter or CV, dealing with health issues and how to use a computer. Each ABET level takes about 6 to 8 months to complete but can be done in less or more time depending on the motivation of the individual and the amount of time available to study.
Because this programme is self-paced, no classes are held. Instead, the learner works on the computer programme, usually half an hour, three times a week. The learner can therefore consult with his/her manager regarding suitable times to attend, meaning less disruption to the work schedule.
