asiphe icon A BSc student, Asiphe Sahula has been awarded a prestigious Canon Collins Trust Graca Machel Scholarship for women for 2012, to study Honours in Environmental Water Management at Rhodes University. The scholarship provides full tuition, a study resource allowance, living expenses allowance and mentoring. This scholarship is awarded to students from a wide range of disciplines, but favour is given to applications for courses or degrees that are relevant to the development needs of Southern Africa. It is awarded to applicants who demonstrate a desire to be part of and to contribute to the future prosperity of Southern Africa.

Asiphe is a member of the Unilever Centre for Environmental Water Quality and her honours project will focus on the impacts of suspended sediment in rivers. She has clearly demonstrated how her chosen institution course fit with the Trust's ambitions, as well as once qualified, how she intends to make a difference. Mrs Machel is particularly keen to provide scholarships to women who have experienced significant struggle in their lives and who have sought to overcome these difficulties. Applicants are expected to demonstrate clearly how their application fits within this agenda. Asiphe was selected for this scholarship among thousands of applications from women from all 15 SADC and to now be referred to as a Canon Collins Scholar. She regards this as her opportunity for further academic growth and the key to fulfil her dream of being part of a generation of difference.
