Adium (for Mac)

Adium supports:

This page deals mainly with configuring MSN and Google Talk, but has a section for configuring other accounts and specific features of certain accounts.
Configuring Adium accounts:
- Open Adium.
- Click 'File', 'Add Account', and select the type of account you wish to configure.

Windows Live / MSN:
- Select 'MSN Messenger' from the 'Add Account' menu.
- In the window that opens, type your .net Passport ID in the 'MSN Passport' field.
- Type your MSN password in the 'Password' field.

- Select the 'Proxy' tab.
- Check the 'Connect using proxy' checkbox and select 'HTTP' from the activated drop-down menu.
- In the 'Server' field type wwwproxy.ru.ac.za
- In the 'Port' field type 3128
- In the 'Username' field type your Rhodes University username.
- In the 'Password' field type your Rhodes University password.
- Check the 'Connect when Adium opens' checkbox and then select 'OK'

Google Talk
- Select 'Google Talk' from the 'Add Account' menu.
- Type your GMail or Google Talk username in the 'GTalk ID' field.
- Type the corresponding password in the 'Password' field.

- Select the 'Proxy' tab.
- Check the 'Connect using proxy' checkbox and select 'HTTP' from the activated drop-down menu.
- In the 'Server' field type wwwproxy.ru.ac.za
- In the 'Port' field type 3128
- In the 'Username' field type your Rhodes University username.
- In the 'Password' field type your Rhodes University password.
- Check the 'Connect when Adium opens' checkbox and then select 'OK'

Configuring Adium for other account types:
- Select the account type you wish to set up from the 'Add Account' menu.
- In the resulting window, input your username and password for that account in the corresponding fields.

- Select the 'Proxy' tab.
- Check the 'Connect using proxy' checkbox and select 'HTTP' from the activated drop-down menu.
- In the 'Server' field type wwwproxy.ru.ac.za
- In the 'Port' field type 3128
- In the 'Username' field type your Rhodes University username.
- In the 'Password' field type your Rhodes University password.
- Check the 'Connect when Adium opens' checkbox and then select 'OK'

Specific Features:
This section has information on setting Adium to notify you of new e-mails to your accounts as well as displaying your iTunes 'Now Playing' song.
Notification of new e-mails:
- Click the 'Adium' file menu, and select 'Preferences'. (Alternatively you can press 'cmd + ,')
- Select the 'Accounts' tab.
- Select the account you wish Adium to notify you about new e-mails and click edit.
- Select the 'Options' tab in the window which opens.
- Check the 'Check for new mail' (MSN, Yahoo!) or 'Display new mail notifications' (Google Talk) checkbox.
- Click 'OK'

Letting others know when you are typing:
- Click the 'Adium' file menu, and select 'Preferences'. (Alternatively you can press 'cmd + ,')
- Select the 'Accounts' tab.
- Select the account you wish Adium to display to your contacts when you are typing and click 'Edit'.
- Select the 'Privacy' tab.
- Check the 'Let others know when you are typing' checkbox.
- Click 'OK'

Displaying iTunes track information as your status:
Note: There is a status option labelled "iTunes" already but some accounts may need to have it enabled.
- Click the 'Adium' file menu, and select 'Preferences'. (Alternatively you can press 'cmd + ,')
- Select the 'Accounts' tab.
- Select the account you wish Adium to display your iTunes status for and click 'Edit'.
- Select the 'Privacy' tab.
- Check the 'Let others know what iTunes is playing' checkbox.
- Click 'OK'
