What is Statistics?

Statistics is a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data. Statistics is a set of concepts, rules and procedures based on probability theory that enable us to organize or summarise numerical information in the form of numbers, tables and graphs or charts. Statistics and statistical techniques, or the underlying principals of these techniques, are utilised to make decisions on matters that affect our lives and well-being. A knowledge of these techniques is essential to make informed decisions. A knowledge of these techniques is essential to assess the validity of these decisions.

Why Study Statistics?

Statistics is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities, and to government and business. For this reason it is a prerequisite/co requisite for a number of subjects and therefore prescribed in many degrees (please see your faculty handbook).
