Configuring Mail (on your Mac)

Note that these instructions are here purely for reference. The University does not support Apple Macs on its network.

  • Start the Mail application (you'll usually find it under Applications in Finder)
  • What you do next depends on whether or not you've used Mail before:
    • If you've never used Mail before, you'll be taken straight to the Add Account wizard.
    • If you already use Mail, go to the Mail menu and select Preferences (or press ?,). Then choose the Accounts tab from the preferences box and click on the add (+) button on the bottom left of the window. This will take you to the Add Account wizard.
  • Fill in your full name in the Full Name: field, your Rhodes (@campus.ru.ac.za) e-mail address in the 'Email Address: field, and your Rhodes password in the Password: field. Then click Continue''.
 
  • On the Incoming Mail Server screen, do the following:
     
    • Set the Account Type: to IMAP
    • Set the Description: to Rhodes Mail
    • Set the Incoming Mail Server: to imap.ru.ac.za
    • Set the Username: to your Rhodes username
    • Set the Password: to your Rhodes password
    • Click Continue
  • On the Outgoing Mail Server screen, do the following:
    • Set the Description: to Rhodes Mail
    • Set the Outgoing Mail Server to mail.ru.ac.za
    • Tick the Use Authentication box
    • Set the Username: to your Rhodes username
    • Set the Password: to your Rhodes password
    • Click Continue
  • You'll then be presented with an Account Summary page showing you your settings. You can clickCreate to create the account in Mail.
