How to Remote Desktop to a Windows computer from another Windows computer

Remote Desktop allows you to see and control a specific computer from another computer across a computer network. This is particularly useful, for example, for accessing your computer in residence from a public lab.

Enabling Remote Desktop

Before you can Remote Desktop to a Windows computer, you have to specify that the computer you want to Remote Desktop to can accept Remote Desktop connections. In order to do this:

  • Right click on 'My Computer'
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • The 'System Properties' window will be displayed
  • Click on the 'Remote' tab
  • Under the 'Remote Desktop' section, make sure that the check box next to 'Allow users to connect remotely to this computer' is selected
  • Click on 'Select Remote Users...'
  • The 'Remote Desktop Users' window will be displayed
  • If you are a member of the Administrators group, you can connect already. If not, you have to add yourself to the Remote Desktop Users. If you are not sure which group you belong to, add yourself anyway. To add yourself, click 'Add...'
  • The 'Select Users' window will be displayed
  • Enter your username in the 'Select the object names to select (examples):' field
  • Click 'OK'
  • Click 'OK' on the 'Remote Desktop Users' window
  • Click 'OK' on the 'System Properties' window
  • The computer should now be ready to accept Remote Desktop connections from other computers

Remote Desktoping to another computer

  • Click 'Start'
  • Click 'All Programs'
  • Click 'Accessories'
  • 'Remote Desktop Connection' will either be found directly in the 'Accessories' folder, or in the 'Communications' sub folder.
  • Click on 'Remote Desktop Connection'

  • The 'Remote Desktop Connection' window will be displayed
  • Enter in the hostname of the computer you want to Remote Desktop to
    • Computers on the Student Network have the following hostname format: '<student number>.<res name>.ru.ac.za'. For example, if your student number is g05z9999 and you live in Piet Retief house, your hostname will be 'g05z9999.pietretief.ru.ac.za', and if your student number is g04q9999 and you live in New House, your hostname will be 'g04q9999.new.ru.ac.za'
    • If you are unsure as to what your computer's host name is, e-mail studentsupport@ru.ac.za and ask us to tell you what it is. Be sure to give us your student number.
  • Click 'Connect'

  • The 'Remote Desktop Connection' window will be displayed
  • Enter your username for the computer you want to connect to in the 'User name:' field
  • Enter your password for the computer you want to connect to in the 'Password:' field
  • Click 'OK'
