Configure Windows' Clock to Automatically Synchronize

Rhodes runs several network time servers, each of which is synchronised to South African Standard Time (as defined by the atomic clock at the National Metrology Institute of South Africa). You can use these servers to get accurate time (within one second of SAST) for your desktop PC.

Rhodes' NTP servers form part of za.pool.ntp.org as a service to the South African Internet community. You can continue to use ntp.ru.ac.za (or za.pool.ntp.org) for time synchronisation even when you're not at Rhodes. See www.pool.ntp.org for more information.

Windows 7/8/10

  • From the Start menu, go to Programs, then to Accessories. If using Windows 8, simply press the windows key and start typing Command prompt.
  • Right click on Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.
  • At the command prompt, type:

net stop w32time
w32tm /config /syncfromflags:manual /manualpeerlist:"ntp.ru.ac.za,za.pool.ntp.org"
sc triggerinfo w32time start/networkon stop/networkoff
net start w32time

  • This will configure your computer to synchronize its clock with Rhodes' time servers and then restart the time service on your computer. You can force a synchronisation with: w32tm /resync.
  • Type exit to exit the command prompt.

Windows XP

  • From the Start menu, go to Programs, then to Accessories
  • Select Command Prompt to start a command prompt window.
  • At the command prompt, type:

net time /setsntp:ntp.ru.ac.za
net stop w32time
net start w32time

  • This will configure your computer to synchronize its clock with Rhodes' time servers and then restart the time service on your computer.
  • Type exit to exit the command prompt.

Note that Windows XP's built-in SNTP client only synchronizes a couple of times a day, so it is possible that your clock may drift by a couple of minutes during the course of a day. If you want more accuracy, install a third-party NTP client and configure it to use ntp.ru.ac.za.

Mac OS X

  • Open System Preferences and select the Date & Time pane.
  • In the text box next to "Set date and time automatically:" type :

ntp.ru.ac.za

  • Make sure "Set date and time automatically" is checked.

This may not work off of campus so if need be select one of the predefined servers when leaving campus for extended periods.

For other operating systems, see help.ru.ac.za.
