2005 ResNet installation schedule

2005 ResNet installation schedule V1.31 2005/04/21

Scheduling
----------
Type A residences will get scheduled first. Type B residences
can probably be dealt with at the same time as the A reses because
two different "contractor" teams are involved. Type B residences
will quickly become type D residences.

In Type C residences, the installation of additional cables will
be dealt with on a first come, first served basis. i.e. the residence
that gets its connection list in first will be scheduled next. The
others will join a waiting list.

In Type D residences, it's purely a paper pushing exercise and there
is no contractor involvement.

Type A residences
-----------------
Four residences, Prince Alfred, Truro, Stanley Kidd (2) and Salisbury do
not have any connections in their rooms. These 4 residences will take
priority as far as scheduling of installation work is concerned, and
their house and tech reps must come up with connection lists as soon
as possible.

Type B residences
-----------------
During the December vac, some of the partially wired residences
that were near saturation had the missing cables installed. For all
sorts of reasons (locked box-rooms, absent wardens, lack of access,
etc) these cables were not all terminated. Terminations can easily and
quite quickly carried out when a connection list is drawn up by the
house/tech rep. These are very close to being Category A residences.

Type C residences
-----------------
The majority of residences are partially wired - i.e. some (often
more than half) of the rooms already contain a connection point,
and students in such rooms can have their connection immediately
as in a Category A res. But there are also some rooms that do not
yet have a connection point. It is possible to install a point in
such a room relatively quickly, with the understanding that in 2004
there were about 450 such connections that needed to be scheduled
for installation and termination.

Type D residences
-----------------
Some residences are completely wired - i.e. they're saturated, and
students wanting a ResNet connection can be satisfied immediately.

The intention is to have all forty residences in this category as
soon as possible, given financial constraints.

Work flow
---------
The ResNet house reps are responsible for collating a connection
list for each Type C residence. These connection lists are passed over
by the IT Division to contractors who install trunking and cables
into the rooms of students that have requested a connection.

When the cable installation is completed, each cable must be
terminated and checked by the IT Division networking team. At this
stage

Work will usually begin at about 09h30 on the start date, and finish
at about 17h00 on the estimated completion date. They don't work
weekends.

If you want to start predicting how long things will take, then
according to one contractor they can get through about 5 points per
day, depending on the res. But of course lots of things can go
wrong.
