Scifest Africa, South Africa’s National Science Festival, aims to promote the public awareness and engagement with science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI). The project consists of two components, namely the National Science Festival held in Grahamstown in March every year, as well as various local, regional and national outreach programmes implemented around the country throughout the rest of the year.
Scifest Africa 2012 will be held in Grahamstown from 14-20 March 2012, and students in their third year of study or above, are now invited to apply for the various Scifriend positions available in the lead-up to -, and during, the festival.
Scifriends are tertiary education students employed as venue managers, ticket office staff, special events assistants, information officers, shop assistants, VIP drivers, exhibition or workshop facilitators, tour guides, ushers, AV technical assistants or mall promotions staff.
While applications from foreign students, third years, and students in non-science faculties will be accepted, preference will be given to South African students in their fourth year of study or above in the sciences.
Successful applicants will be remunerated, and will receive basic training in science communication, as well as task-specific training. Scifriends must be available for training on 25 February, 3 March and 10 March 2012.
Application forms are available online at www.scifest.org.za or from the Scifest Africa Office, Second Floor, 1820 Settlers National Monument, Fort Selwyn Drive, Grahamstown.
Applications close on 25 November 2011.
