Health

The physical and emotional well being of students is of prime concern to the University and forms an important focus of the available services. Apart from common physical ailments, students frequently experience other sources of stress and distress including academic difficulties, being away from home and relationship problems which may seriously affect their general performance.

In addition, more serious problems such as alcohol or drug dependence, eating disorders, sexual abuse and emotional disorders (including depression and anxiety) are not uncommon amongst students.

Students are urged to discuss these and other concerns with the qualified personnel at one of the four centres on campus - the Counselling & Career Centre the Sanatorium, the Psychology Clinic, or the SRC Counselling Centre - so that they can receive the necessary professional care in good time.

All dealings with the staff of these services are regarded as strictly confidential, within normal legal limits.

It is important to note that students will not automatically be excluded from a Residence if they are, for instance, pregnant, HIV positive, drug dependant, or have an eating disorder.

The Health Centre

The nursing staff in the Health Centre are ready to provide a professional and caring service to keep you healthly and well during your time as a student at Rhodes. In addition to providing primary health care, the Health Care Centre also runs educational campaigns.

It's the building on the right, halfway up Lucas Avenue, The steep road that goes up the hill past Eden Grove.

When is it open

In Term Time:

Saturday, Sunday and Public holidays

Free Services

Treatment of minor ailments such as flu, tonsillitis, etc.
Long-term treatment of chronic illnesses, such as hypertension and diabetes
In-patient care for acute illnesses
Management and care of patients with infectious diseases
Post-operative observations
Emergency assessment and crisis management (e.g rape)
Voluntary HIV testing, including pre- and post- test counselling (MON-FRI FROM 14h00-16h00)
Screening tests e.g blood pressure
Family planning advise / pregnancy
Vitamin tabs and appropriate antibiotics for HIV and AIDS patients

Leave of Absence

Students who are going to miss any academic work (lectures, tutorials, tests, etc) for any reason should arrange for a Leave Of Absence from the Department(s) concerned. Please note that it is the students' responsibility to arrange for Leave Of Absence. The Reason For Absence forms, which are obtainable from the Student Bureau as well as from your Warden and from the Sanatorium, may be signed by a person in authority who can verify your claim. If you have not consulted anybody while you were ill you will not be able to have them support your request for a Leave Of Absence.
