Dr Mel Skead
Mel has been working in higher education for more than 30 years, first lecturing English and then migrating into academic development in 2003. She has been involved in student and staff development as well as academic management at various higher education institutions including Vista University, Fort Hare and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. During this time, she designed and implemented a range of academic development programmes, both credit –bearing (Certificate in the Facilitation of Learning for tutors and peer facilitators) and developmental (Scholarship in Teaching and Learning Certificate for academics). In 2013, she was awarded the NMMU Teaching and Learning Institutional Award for excellence in teaching development.
Mel was in the first cohort of students to complete the PG Dip (HE) for academic developers offered by CHERTL (2011-2012) and currently facilitates this course as well as the PG Dip (HE) for academics with CHERTL colleagues. She has been actively involved in the work of the Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association (HELTASA) as Convenor for the Professional Development Special Interest Group as well as SIG Liaison on the Executive Committee. She works in the areas of teaching and curriculum development and is interested in the interplay between knowledge and identity construction among academic developers.
