Rhodes VC calls for speedy transformation in universitiesDate Released: Tue, 1 March 2016 16:16 +0200
University protest actions of 2015 and this year have raised some fundamental questions about transformation at South African universities, says Rhodes University Vice Chancellor, Professor Sizwe Mabizela.
Addressing student bodies and academics at the 5th Unisa Research and Innovation Week in Pretoria, Mabizela called for a speedy transformation process in all areas of concerns at institutions of higher learning.
Speaking at the same event Wits University's Vice Chancellor, Professor Adam Habib, condemned the violence that has taken place during student protests.
Habib says, "There is no legitimacy to violence. It must be made very clear. The EFF needs to make that point as much as the ANC makes that point as much as the DA. To keep the view that violence is legitimate under certain conditions is romanticising violence. That I think is irresponsible. Lets sit down and work out a time frame that works out, what is the most legitimate way to address the challenges we have."
