Ingrid Winterbach (Lettie Viljoen) is die skrywer van Klaaglied vir Koos, Erf, Belemmering, Karolina Ferreira, Landskap met vroue en slang, Buller se plan en Niggie. Die roman Karolina Ferreira is bekroon met die M-Net Boekprys en die Ou Mutual Letterkundeprys, en Buller se plan met die W.A. Hofmeyr-prys. In 2005 het ’n vertaling van Karolina Ferreira verskyn onder die titel The Elusive Moth. In 2004 het Ingrid Winterbach die Hertzogprys vir prosa ontvang vir Niggie (2002). Sy woon in Durban en is ook beeldende kunstenaar.
Gouws (née Winterbach) was born on 14 February 1948 in Johannesburg and grew up in Florida, Gauteng. She studied at the Universities of Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch in Fine Arts and Afrikaans literature. She taught in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch for thirteen years, and for five years in the Department of Afrikaans-Nederlands at the university of KwaZulu-Natal. Winterbach is also a visual artist, is married, has two daughters and lives in Durban.

Die Boek Van Toeval en Toeverlaat
BESKRYWING:
Helena Verbloem, leksikograaf van beroep, gaan na Durban as projek-assistent van ’n man wat alle woorde byeen probeer bring wat in onbruik geraak het in Afrikaans. Dan word daar by haar tuinwoonstel ingebreek en haar geliefde skulpe word gesteel. Die verhaal ontvou rondom die soektog na die gesteelde skulpe. Hierdie soeke raak verweef en verstrengel met die taalbewaringsprojek, die mense wat sy daar leer ken en met haar algemene besinning oor haar lewe – herinneringe aan haar familie, verlore minnaars en liefdes, verliese wat sy gely het. Ek weet wat ’n terapeut sal sê. Agter elke verlies lê ’n vroeër verlies. Die verlies van my skulpe is ’n voorwendsel (’n jakkalsdraai, ’n verbloeming en bewimpeling) ’n poging van die geslepe psige om die vroeër, pynlike verlies te verdoesel. Dié woorde van die self-ironiserende verteller in hierdie fassinerende roman raak twee van die belangrikste temas aan: verlies en verbloeming.

DESCRIPTION:
A woman comes to Durban to assist in a language preservation project. Then her cottage is burgled and her beautiful collection of shells is missing. Her determined search for her shells becomes interwoven with her work and the people she gets to know there, especially her new friend, Sof. And in the process she also reflects on her life – her childhood, her family, her lovers before her marriage, her ex-husband, her current lover. Two of the novel’s most important themes are loss and concealment. Featuring a number of very intriguing characters, this is a remarkable novel by one of the most important Afrikaans writers of our time.
