Thesis title: Post-Release Field Evaluation of Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Hemiptera: Delphacidae): A biological control agent of water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms-Laub (Commelinales: Pontederiaceae) in South Africa

Supervisors: Prof. Martin Hill & Dr. Julie Coetzee

Ben Miller completed a BSc (Hons) at Rhodes University in 2016 and is currently working as a Masters candidate on the post-release evaluation of the planthopper, Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) on water hyacinth. The planthopper is the most recently released biological control agent on water hyacinth in South Africa. Alongside this, he is also using mesocosm experiments to understand the relationship between the nutrient status of water hyacinth and the effectiveness of planthopper herbivory on the weeds. This study will enable us to prioritize release sites where success is most likely to be achieved using biological control.
