National Student Entrepreneurship Week

The 2019 Rhodes University Student Entrepreneurship Week, also known as #SEW2019 will showcase, encourage and support studententrepreneurs from the 8th August – 15th August and has the following scheduled programme;


Day 1: 8th August

Time: 18:00- 21:00

Venue: Eden Grove Red

Programme: Opening Ceremony of RU SEW 2019,

The launch of SEW at Rhodes  which will be accompanied by the student panel discussion on how to drive studententrepreneurship at Rhodes – From Lekgotla 2019 to Rhodes SEW2019

Hackathon Launch : The launch of Rhodes Hackathon an event, typically lasting several days, in which a large number of people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming to come up with solutions that they will pitch later on the week.


Day 2: 9th August

Time: 15:00- 18:00

Venue: Rustic Route

Programme: Sophia Town  - By Africa Events -A student led business entity celebrating women’s day in the old fashion way 


Day 3: 12th August

Time: 12:00- 13:00

Venue: Steve Biko Lecture

Programme:  Facilitation of hackathon as a follow up from the weekend independent work done by hackathon teams


Evening session: Guest Speaker 2019,

Time: 18:00- 21:00

Venue: Eden Groove Blue

Programme: Ms Johanna Mukoki (Winner of  Ernest & Young  World Entrepreneur-2012 Southern Africa and sister to Basetsana Khumalo) speaks to Rhodes students (Incl. Rhodes Community) on ‘Branding to attract opportunities as entrepreneur’. This session will help students as entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs on the opportunities.

A one-on- one couch  conversations with Johanna  done by a Rhodes student will take us through Ms Mukoki’s journey on ‘Being a women in business- tips beyond varsity.


Day 4: 13th August

Time: 7:30 am

Programme:  A closed breakfast session with strategic Rhodes Women Leaders towards building an innovative entrepreneurial institution  under the theme:  Pioneering  Rhodes (the institution and its community) beyond the 21st century ahead in the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR), with Ms Mukoki as the Alumni in the conversations

Evening session: : Pitch Coaching

Time 18:00-20:00

Venue: Eden Groove Blue

An individualised pitch coaching to all students as participants of the hackathon pitch. Everyone is welcomed


Day 5: 14th August

Time: 12:00-14:00

Venue: Eden Groove Seminar Room 3

Programme: Lunchtime Masterclass

a)A guest entrepreneur (an old Rhodian) will be offering master class to all potential or existing studententreprenuers on how to make money whilst still student.

b)Funding opportunities for students as entrepreneurs from National Youth Development Agency (NYDA)

c)Be!! Bold Roadshow


Evening Session: Pitch Competition

Time: 18:00-20:00

Venue: Barratt Seminar Room 2

Programme: Hackathon Presentation and Pitch and Prize giving for winner


Day 6: 15th August

Time: 16:00-19:00

Venue: Provost

Programme: Lean Start Up Coffee and Market Place

All societies and studententreprenuers to market their products and services whilst networking
