The 2017 Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Awardee, Dr Sally Matthews will present her lecture on Wednesday, 15th August 2018 in the Eden Grove Blue Lecture Theatre at 18h30.

TITLE: Reflections from a Position of Privilege: An Account of a Research Trajectory

ABSTRACT (Summary):

In this lecture, I reflect upon my research trajectory in order to illustrate the twists and turns that often characterise the research process and to show how one’s societal position affects one’s research. Using my own meandering research trajectory – replete with dead ends and false starts – I try to grapple with what it means to do research that is responsive to my own societal position as a privileged, white woman living at the southern tip of Africa. In so doing, I also hope to pay homage to the ideas of some of the many thoughtful thinkers who have influenced my research, touching particularly on thinking around development, privilege and the possibility of reimagining Africa.

All are welcome to attend.
