National Science Week Open Day
On the 30th of July 2016, the first National Science Week Rhodes University Faculties of Science and Pharmacy Open Day took place in partnership with NRF-SAIAB and NRF-SAASTA. The day looked at the importance of cultivating excitement and interest in Science and Maths as subjects for Grade 9 learners to choose for matric and their future. 250 learners were welcomed from 9 different Grahamstown and Bathurst schools to Rhodes for an action packed morning. The aim was to spark fresh thinking and a scientific interest in science amongst the school learners, they were exposed to the vast array of disciplines and specialisations in science that universities have to offer. The learners had the opportunity to participate in interactive workshops and activities where they got to learn by doing and becoming the scientists in the activities where they used materials and equipment which are unavailable in our high school classrooms.
Lecturers, lab technicians and university students were the demonstrators, facilitators and co-investigators in the activities. Through engaging with school learners in activities within their discipline they act as role models with experience and enthusiasm for science and learning, and are able to inspire and motivate young learners.
