Bruce Brown

Prof Bruce Brown has worked at Rhodes University since August 1989. He lectured in the Department of Mathematics (Pure and Applied) from 1989 to 1997, moving to work at RUMEP (Rhodes University Mathematics Education Project) from 1998 to 2005, and has worked in the Department of Education from 2006. He took up the position as Head of the Department for two terms, from October 2010 until June 2016.

Bruce’s major academic interests are: the learning of mathematics for effective mathematical thinking in action at all levels; rational number learning and teaching; psychological approaches to thinking, learning and practice; and self-sustaining change processes in teacher education and professional development. Much of his research is oriented to dynamical processes and to understanding the systems of interaction involved in these processes.
