Callie Grant is a Professor and previous Head of the Education Department at Rhodes University. A C2 rated NRF researcher, Prof Grant’s teaching, research and community engagement is predominantly in the field of Educational Leadership and Management (ELM). In particular, her research interests include distributed leadership, democratic leadership, transformative leadership, teacher leadership, learner leadership as well as school resilience. Together with Dr Farhana Kajee, Callie is involved in an eight-year learner leadership development programme with ELM Honours students across Namibia and South Africa. Framed by Cultural Historical Activity Theory, this programme adopts a formative interventionist methodology as it attempts to develop the field conceptually whilst simultaneously expanding and transforming school leadership practices. Callie is also involved in another ELM research programme which investigates the leadership preparation and development of school leaders in South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia and Botswana. In addition, she leads the five-year University Staff Doctoral Programme on socio-educational challenges in the Eastern Cape. Aside from ELM, Callie is also interested in higher education as a field of study. Here her interests include the scholarship of teaching and learning, doctoral education and post-graduate supervision practices. Additionally, she enjoys teaching courses on qualitative research methods.

 

Teaching and learning

At postgraduate level, Callie is involved in teaching on the Honours ELM specialism, and the structured Masters and PhD full thesis programmes in ELM. She also enjoys teaching on the Faculty Research Design Course. At the undergraduate level, Callie has taught courses in ‘Education and Professional Studies’ as well as ‘Curriculum Studies’ in the B Ed Foundation Phase Programme and the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education.
