The Environmental Learning Research Centre is the home of a vibrant and diverse community of scholars and environmental education practitioners, and forms a regional hub of environmental learning innovation.
The centre hosts a postgraduate research programme of between 50-60 scholars, approximately 20 of whom are PhDs. We increasingly work with local, national, regional and international partners to develop research-informed and research-led short and certificate courses; the ELRC enjoys collaborative partnerships with over 50 partners across the world.
Current Murray & Roberts Chair in Environmental Education at Rhodes University, Professor Heila Lotz- Sisitka can add another notable title to her name, that of a South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) Chair holder.
Based in Rhodes University’s Environmental Learning Research Centre, Lotz- Sisitka is a professor in Education, and for the past 22 years, her research has focussed broadly on education system development and transformative social learning for green, more socially just and sustainable economies and societies at local, regional, and international levels.
UNITED NATIONS REGIONAL CENTRE OF EXPERTISE The Environmental Learning Research Centre (ELRC) functions as the Makana and Rural Eastern Cape Regional Centre of Expertise for Sustainable Development(RCE).We are a part of a worldwide network of such centres connected through United Nations University. As an RCE, we aim to promote environmental sustainable development in our region through partnering with local and regional stakeholders, building platforms for sharing information and experience, and encouraging education around sustainable development in institutions and professional environments.
