BSc.Ed, University of the Western Cape, BEd, University of the Western Cape
My academic foundation is a Bachelor of Science Education Degree (BSc.Ed) with Botany, Zoology and Education as majors from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), and a Bachelor of Education - B.Ed (UWC). I am currently enrolled with Rhodes University where I am pursuing an M.Ed in Environmental Education with the Environmental Learning and Research Centre. I am passionate about education, training and development and specifically the development of capacity of youth within the environmental sector. I enjoy working and engaging with people and working within the Human Capital Development domain offers me great job satisfaction, especially knowing that you’re making a difference in society, people’s lives, and the country as a whole by restoring people’s dignity through promoting a connectedness to the land. This kind of work helps give people hope for the future and it allows you to live your love for people and the environment, and speak to the political and transformational agenda of South Africa.
Research interest: My research interest is linked to my work at SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute – www.sanbi.org), managing a national job creation and skills development programme for unemployed youth in the biodiversity sector, called Groen Sebenza. I will focus on a case study of implementation by one or two of the host institutions as partners within this pilot project, looking at various components of the programme ie. mentoring, training, institutional systems and other factors that contributed to the successful uptake or employment of the young people (pioneers) into the sector.
